The final piece of this three-part series is in response to how the JWs answer the question, “Is the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses Propagandistic?”
I recall the first time I had read the two previous articles on this subject with my figurative JW goggles OFF as opposed to on. I was in shock and mortified at how blatantly we, as Jehovah’s Witnesses, violated each and every one of the warnings given. I thought to myself “Surely THIS article (Is the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses Propagandistic) would present evidence to the contrary, no?” I read the article and was equally stunned. As you can see, it starts out with an immediate red herring logical fallacy. Instead of answering whether or not the work of JWs is propagandistic, they instead talk about Zionists, communism, American Imperialism and anarchy…….claiming that JWs reflect none of the above. OK. I agree. But that’s not what the question was. The question was “Is the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses propagandistic?” The ONLY way to answer that question is to compare the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses to the negative examples of propaganda they described in their first two articles on this topic……..which I’ve done already. Is it any wonder why they didn’t want to do that?
Their work focuses exclusively on the “good news” of the heavenly kingdom……..as interpreted by their leadership. And what is that “good news” again? Oh yeah. You must convert and strictly obey or you will be destroyed.
“Only Jehovah’s Witnesses, those of the anointed remnant and the “great crowd,” as a united organization under the protection of the Supreme Organizer, have any Scriptural hope of surviving the impending end of this doomed system dominated by Satan the Devil.” Watchtower 1989 Sep 1 p.19
Next they throw out another red herring argument…… claiming that observers have found no evidence that Jehovah’s Witnesses have ever been a disruptive force to the good order of any land. Again, not being disruptive does NOT answer the question as to whether or not you are propagandistic. Law abiding Nazi citizens weren’t disruptive to the government of Germany in the 1930s and 1940s either, but were they fully engaged in and consumed by propaganda? YES!
And next is……guess what? Another red herring argument. Somehow they seem to think that if they throw enough diversions into the mix……this time in the form of random and anonymous “quotations” from “judges and journalists”……. perhaps we’ll just forget that we are supposed to be comparing their teachings to the propaganda examples they brought out in the first two articles. That being said, I just love the first quote. Clearly this “observer” has never seen how they treat family members that are no longer Jehovah’s Witnesses or he wouldn’t be commenting on the strength of their “family ties”. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there are NO family ties amongst Jehovah’s Witnesses. No…..the organization has inserted itself between husbands and wives…..between mothers and daughters……between fathers and sons…..and between brothers and sisters. There is no such thing as a direct family relationship in JW land. You must obey all rules, regulations, dictates and doctrines. Then and only then are you allowed to carry on a “strong family tie” with your own flesh and blood. If you fail to accept all rules, regulations, dictates and doctrines….. you will be disfellowshipped. And when you are disfellowshipped those family ties are completely cut off. THAT is why I say there are NO DIRECT family ties in that cult. Family relationships and bonds are mediated through the organization. If the tie to the organization is undone……..so is the tie to that family member.
“Jehovah’s Witnesses teach the rightness of submission to authority.” And…….that’s a veiled way of saying “JWs know never to question leadership.” You see, they will gladly share with you that they submit to the authority of the government. Thus, they can claim to be “peaceable and law abiding”. But what they don’t tell you is that the rules and regulations of their leadership supersedes that of the country or state. Therefore, they will only submit to the authority of the government so long as it is in agreement with their leadership. So in all actuality, the submission of Jehovah’s Witnesses to the authority of government isn’t what it seems. They are REALLY in submission to the governing body (leadership) who, in turn, ALLOW them to follow state and federal law as well.
It is my humble opinion that the previous two articles on this matter have proven that the work of the witnesses is anything BUT educational. It is the perfect definition of indoctrination and propaganda. Using THEIR bible with THEIR cherry picked scriptures and THEIR interprerations, THEY teach people to accept and conform to THEIR ideas that THEY cleverly masquerade as “biblical principles”.
Promoting certain values and helping young people cope with challenges can certainly be a good thing. So can helping people to find the strength to overcome bad habits. But yet again, this does not answer whether or not their teachings are propagandistic. No one questions that most JWs are good people. No one questions that they have overall good morals and try to abide by the law. The problem isn’t with individual Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is with the one-sided indoctrination and control of their leadership.
Reiterating the positive attributes that individual Jehovah’s Witnesses may possess does not change the fact that their leadership is indeed dogmatic with their teachings. JWs are told that that they must believe what is handed down in order to be accepted by God. They are not to question. I have dug up a plethora of examples of fact sifting, half truths and quotes taken out of context. They insult those that disagree with them. They make generalizations. They lie. They do EVERYTHING that they themselves described in their own magazine as propagandistic, and I have shown stark, undeniable proof in parts 1 and 2 of this series.
They close by answering the question “is the work of Jehovah’s Witnesses propagandistic?” with a purposely diversionary and irrelevant answer. Claiming that individual JWs are good people and that they try to help others sometimes does NOT change the fact that they do indeed engage in the development and spreading of one side, misleading propaganda. What is beyond sad is that 99 out of 100 current JWs could read all three of those articles and completely miss all the points I’ve brought out……because as I said in part 1, they are trained not to apply any critical judgment to the organization.
Let me give you an example of what the governing body did with this article. Let’s take a look at a different hypothetical question. That question is, “Is OJ a murderer?”. My response is “OJ has donated a lot of money to charity. He volunteers at the local soup kitchen for the homeless. He loves children and shows it by sponsoring several fund raisers each year for the children’s hospital. Do those sound like the actions of a murderer?”
Think about how that sounds. I made this hypothetical OJ sound like a pretty swell guy didn’t I? But at NO point did I ever address whether or not he is a murderer. I used a clever red herring logical fallacy to divert your attention away from the initial question and instead focused on other, good attributes that I want you to remember instead. Well…..the leadership of Jehovah’s Witnesses did the very same thing with this article of theirs. Every last thing they said was nothing but a red herring argument designed to divert the reader’s attention away from the real question at hand. They trick the reader into focusing on the wrong facts! And they use this method on their own members constantly!
AGAIN. I will ask. Did this article by the Jehovah’s Witnesses truly answer whether or not they engage in propagandistic teaching and behavior? How do you answer such a question? You respond point by point to the various examples given in their previous two articles that describe the many forms of propaganda. That is the ONLY way to accurately determine whether or not you are engaging in propagandistic behavior. But that isn’t what they did is it? Instead they chose to answer a complete set of new and unrelated questions. They were purposely evasive because they know that their material is teeming with propaganda. But sadly……they also know that the vast majority of their “flock” is so mind controlled that they can openly share these negative examples…..knowing full well that individual witnesses will never apply critical judgment to the very organization that is telling them what to watch out for.
